Charlotte Bobcats Head Coach Larry Brown today was selected by the NBA as Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for January. The honor is Brown’s ninth and the first for a Bobcats coach. Denver’s George Karl won the award for the Western Conference.
Brown led the Bobcats to a 12-4 record for the month, breaking the franchise record of nine wins in a month and equaling the team’s win total of 12 entering January. The 12-4 record was the third best in the NBA for the month behind only Cleveland and Denver, who were each 12-3. The Bobcats tied a franchise record with six straight wins from Jan. 9-20 and set a new franchise record with nine straight home wins from Dec. 22-Jan. 20, topping the previous high of five straight. The team was 5-3 on the road in January, after entering the month 1-14 away from home.
The Bobcats averaged 102.3 points per game in 16 contests in January, up from 91.7 points in the season’s first 30 games, and scored at least 100 points nine times, compared to eight times previously. For the month, the team shot .471 from the field, .407 from beyond the three-point line and .766 from the free-throw line, compared to .440, .307 and .725, respectively, over the season’s first 30 games.
The month began with back-to-back wins at Miami and Cleveland, including a comeback from a 19-point deficit against Miami that tied the franchise record for largest deficit overcome in a win. The Bobcats also rallied from double-figure deficits to defeat Memphis on Jan. 9 and Houston on Jan. 12. In the Jan. 16 win over Phoenix, the Bobcats scored 43 points in the first quarter and 74 points in the first half, setting a franchise record for points in a quarter and tying the franchise record for points in a half en route to a 125-99 win.
On Jan. 20, the Bobcats beat Miami 104-65, setting franchise records for fewest points allowed (65), fewest field goals allowed (22), lowest field goal percentage allowed (.289) and largest margin of victory (39). Charlotte ended the month with three straight road wins at Phoenix, Golden State and Sacramento.
The Bobcats enter tonight’s game at Portland with a record of 24-22, marking the second time this month and just the fourth time in franchise history that the team has been two games above .500. The 24-22 record is the latest into a season the team has ever been above .500. Prior to this season, the latest was 6-5 in the 2007-08 season.
